American Board of Maritime Medicine

Dedicated to Maritime Physicians, Maritime Nurses and Maritime Public Health Specialists

ABMM – Definitional Considerations

The ABMM reference to “seafarer” and “passengers,” while being inclusive of definitional references expoused by the ILO/ MLC, is intended to be much more expansive and inclusive – because the ABMM believes that the healthcare and medical care delivered to members of the maritime community must be maintained at all times at the highest quality notwithstanding the designated nomenclature of work assignment a particular individual may be assigned; and no matter where such individual may be performing their duties in the maritime community.

In that regard, because the ABMM is the only world-wide certifying body, which provides Board Certification to Maritime Physicians, Maritime Nurses, and Maritime Public Health Specialists, in an effort to foster collegiality, professional excellence and leadership amongst Maritime Physicians, Maritime Nurses, and Maritime Public Health Specialists, so as to promote the excellence of patient care within the maritime community.

The standards for certification by the ABMM which are achieved by maritime healthcare professionals are intended for the application and benefit of ALL members of the maritime community (e.g., seafarers, offshore maritime platform and rig workers, cruise ship passengers and visitors, maritime resort island workers, fishing vessels, etc.)

We welcome you to the ABMM!

We hope you find our website informative and worthy of your time and consideration – and we encourage Maritime Physicians, Maritime Nurses and Maritime Public Health Specialists to evaluate our eligibility criteria and apply for Board Certification – and gain worldwide recognition as being a member of a highly distinguished community of experts and clinicians who have demonstrated a mastery of the core body of knowledge and skills required to engage in the competent and professional practice of Maritime Medicine.

We personally look forward to helping you with your professional achievements and advancement!
