ABMM Organization
The American Board of Maritime Medicine, Inc., is a duly registered non-profit corporation with the State of Florida (Federal 501(c)(3) Status is pending); which functions through the American Board of Maritime Medicine (ABMM).

ABMM History
The American Board of Maritime Medicine (ABMM) was founded as result of research conducted by the Fulbright Academy of Law, Peace and Public Health which identified a world-wide need for documenting and recognizing Maritime healthcare care professional practitioner excellence in the practice and therapeutics utilized to treat seafarers and patients in the maritime community.
The Fulbright Academy research discovered that no world-wide certifying body exists which exemplifies to the general public that Maritime Physicians, Maritime Nurses, and Maritime Public Health specialists have specialized knowledge, skills and expertise in the practice of Medicine at sea.

ABMM Mission
The American Board of Maritime Medicine (ABMM) mission is to serve as an industry and general public standard for the professional recognition of highly distinguished Maritime Healthcare Professionals: Maritime Physicians, Maritime Nurses, and Maritime Public Health Specialists. The ABMM will serve as a unifying organization to foster collegiality, professional excellence and leadership amongst Maritime Physicians, Maritime Nurses, and Maritime Public Health Specialists whose priority is the advancement of patient care and safety.
ABMM Objectives
The objectives of the ABMM include the following:
- To provide opportunities for board certification for Maritime Physicians, Maritime Nurses, and Maritime Public Health Specialists exhibiting excellence and proficiency in the clinical practice of Maritime Medicine.
- To develop and provide educational programs to potential board certification candidates and other interested professionals related to the understanding and clinical practice of Maritime Medicine, Maritime Nursing and Maritime Public Health.
- To establish and maintain world-wide professional standards for board certification in the practice of Maritime Medicine, Maritime Nursing and Maritime Public Health
- To provide a collegial forum for addressing excellence and certification in the practice of Maritime Medicine, Maritime Nursing, and Maritime Public Health.
- To promote, collegiality, fraternity amongst Diplomates and Maritime Physicians, Maritime Nurses, and Maritime Public Health Specialists.
- To serve as a resource and to inform the public and interested pertinent organizations regarding board certification in the practice of Maritime Medicine, Maritime Nursing, and Maritime Public Health.
- To work collegiately and cooperatively with leading world and National/State maritime organizations (e.g., ILO, IMO, WHO, ACEP, etc.)To coordinate educational and professional activities with organizations (World-wide and National/ State) for the improvement of the practice of Maritime Medicine, Maritime Nursing, and Maritime Public Health.
ABMM Code of Ethics
Diplomates of the ABMM affirm the following Code of Ethics:
- To strive to maintain the highest standard of personal conduct.
- To strive to maintain the highest standards of excellence of the practice of Maritime Medicine, Maritime Nursing, and Maritime Public Health.
- To promote and encourage the highest level of healthcare, medical and public health ethics in the practice of Maritime Medicine, Maritime Nursing, and Maritime Public Health.
- To maintain and encourage loyalty to the mission, values and objectives of the ABMM.
- To provide impartial patient care without bias, influence, corruption, or designation of work status or job title.
- To maintain patient confidentiality of privileged information.
- To work cooperatively with other Physicians, Nurses and Public Health Specialists for the best interest of the patient.
- To promote world-wide public awareness and knowledge of Maritime Medicine, Maritime Nursing, and Maritime Public Health.
